Madison Metropolitan School District

  • Participates in state and national environmental programs to educate their staff and students
  • Finding ways to improve facilities and purchasing habits to acquire LEED and Energy Star products
  • Undertook multiple energy retrofits like installing efficient lighting, motion-activated systems for lights, toilets and vending machines, efficient windows, roofs, boilers, and hot water tanks. Tracks energy usage.
  • Pursues alternative energy (solar, geo-thermal, bio-diesel) for power and as an educational tool
  • Participates in Action Day Program and provides commuting and health information to employees

Northwestern Mutual

  • Provides numerous commuter options including carpool matching, easy and discounted carpool parking, subsidized transit passes through the MCTS Commuter Value Pass Program, bike parking, showers and lockers and financial support for a bike club
  • Offers on-site amenities such as food, banking, fitness, and dry-cleaning to reduce commuting needs
  • Employing energy conservation measures at new Franklin facility: planted over 1,000 trees, installed efficient lighting and under-floor air distribution system, planning to install thermal-chilled water storage system
  • Participates in Ozone Action Day Program and provides commuting and health information to employees

  • Conserving energy and reducing emissions by retrofitting all of their plant lighting, HVAC improvements, procurement of Energy Star products, capturing ink emissions in pressrooms, capturing and reusing VOCs from ink as a fuel source for offset presses
  • Reduces vehicle emissions through participation in EPA’s SmartWay Transport Partnership by using anti-idling technology and more aerodynamic truck designs in their fleet
  • Educates employees and clients about air quality and actions they are taking to minimize impacts via newsletters, factsheets, TV monitors and informational kiosks in plants, electronic bulletins and use of an environmental mascot (Gruff the spokesgoat)
  • Reduces impacts of commuting by using condensed work schedules and partnering with local transit providers to have bus stops at their plants
